Quick Party Planning Tips

Plan a Halloween Party in 1 Week (Or Less)

by Chef Wards

Halloween is next week, but it’s not too late to throw a party. I know what you’re thinking: I can’t plan a party in 1 week. Most people believe that in order to host an epic event, you need to plan for weeks, months, even a year. Sure, in many cases (like your daughter’s wedding) that may be true. But sometimes, the more last minute the better!

For one, you don’t have time to overthink every decision. You tend to go with your first instincts, which are usually right on the money. Next, you focus on the big picture, as opposed to all the little (read: overwhelming) details. Fog machines and DJs are great, but they’re not really necessary. Finally, there’s always something inspiring about spontaneity. While most people “would like to host a party”, you’re actually going for it. Good for you!

Quick Party Planning Tips

Mixology 101

Unless you’re a bartender with lots of recipes up your sleeve, you don’t need to have every type of liquor on hand. Select one incredible cocktail and make a large batch. Or, set out the main ingredients and have your guests make their own. Be sure to put a sign on the bar, so everyone knows what you’re featuring and why. To keep it festive, come up with clever names and concoctions, like Blood-Orange Margaritas, Witch’s Ginger Brew or Vampire Punch.

Finger Foods Redefined

Skip the fancy sit-down meal and serve plated hors d’oeuvres. This way, you don’t have to plan a full menu or break out the silverware. Plus, you can make just a few light bites in bulk. Consider the recipes that are easiest for you, and give them an upgrade. Ideas: Brie and Green Apple Bite-Sized Paninis, Grilled Chicken with Soy Sauce and Green Onions (pictured), Sliced Tenderloin Served on Crostini with Whipped Goat Cheese and Slow-Cooked Pork Sliders.

Local Decorations

Head to a local farm and pick up pumpkins and gourds. Present them as is, or carve them and set votives inside to provide a little mood lighting. Better yet, set up a pumpkin carving station, and let your guests decorate for you. Have them carve or decorate a pumpkin, and let their creations serve as the Halloween décor. Remember to have a good playlist set on your phone while everyone carves, eats and drinks.
