The one thing these things all have in common? They are sure to be dad-approved.
Ideas For How To Celebrate Father’s Day In Austin (During Covid)
Enjoy the view at Mount Bonnell.
Mount Bonnell is a popular Austin favorite for locals and tourists alike, and for good reason! It offers an unparalleled view, one well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see not only the Colorado River but Hill Country. It is one of the best places to take your dad on a quick hike for Father’s Day. 106 steps to the top!
Enjoy “Dad Time” With a Hike or Bike at Lady Bird Lake.
Lady Bird Lake offers a plethora of hiking and biking trails where you can grab a bit of fresh air, not to mention ample time to catch-up on just being with your dad. If hiking or biking isn’t quite your dad’s speed, a sunset walk along the boardwalk is the perfect way to relax and just engage in some meaningful conversation, especially if you’ve been apart for a while (thanks to Covid). Take in the sights along the way, including the Barton Creek pedestrian bridge, and don’t leave out a stop at the dog park.
Immerse yourself in Austin’s street art.
From South Congress to The Drag, explore any of Austin’s neighborhoods and you’re sure to discover a mural or two. After all, Austin is famous for its street art. A fun Father’s Day idea (and an inexpensive one at that) is to simply take your dad on a gallery tour, curated by you. You are sure to find a piece that will become his new favorite, or at least give him a good Father’s Day chuckle. Create your own walking route, or take one that has been curated by someone who knows the lay of the land, like this street art guide from AustinTexas.org.

Head to a ballgame.
Buy him some peanuts and cracker jacks, because there is nothing as tried-and-true when it comes to traditional Father’s Day activities as enjoying a baseball game. The Round Rock Express have been gradually increasing their attendance levels as Covid regulations adjust. Father’s Day just happens to be a home game that night, and they are facing off with Oklahoma City. You can grab tickets to the game here. Time to head to Dell Diamond!
Rent his dream car.
There are fun Father’s Day ideas, and then there are COOL Father’s Day ideas. This one falls into both categories. Ferrari. Porsche. Tesla. Take your pick, or rather, your dad’s pick, and rent him the exotic car of his dreams for a day. Cruising around Austin, he might have no greater adrenaline rush than crossing the river behind the wheels of a luxury car. You can find rentals for the day offered by local Austinites on the Turo website.
Head out to Lake Travis.
The bass fishing on Lake Travis abounds, and Father’s Day is a great day to throw out a line or two. But Lake Travis offers more than just fishing. For the more adventurous, Lake Travis Zipline Adventures offers ziplining that gives you impressive aerial views of Lake Travis and Hill Country. If you purchase one of their packages, you get to go on a guided nature hike or walk through Texas Hill Country. In-between zips you can relax in one of their hammocks.
Enjoy the tried-and-true Texas tradition of floating the San Marcos River
There is nothing that screams Father’s Day AND summer quite like an afternoon taking in the great Texas tradition that is, well, floating down a river. Grab your supplies (we’re talking Lone Star beer and a waterproof speaker) and take your dad for a relaxing float. If you don’t want to deal with the inner tubes or the transport, check out Texas State Tubes.
Prefer to celebrate Father’s Day at home? We’ve got you covered.

Enjoy a DIY Construction Project Together
If your dad is a “Tim the Toolman Taylor” type, it might be time to bust out the hammer and the saw. Think of a project you can do together. It could be something purely for the fun of it, or perhaps you can double up on the gift by completing a home improvement project that has been languishing on his to-do list for quite a while. This is not only a fun Father’s Day idea but a useful one as well.
Host An Outdoor Movie Night
Movie night in the backyard is almost like going to a drive-in theatre, but probably better because you can control the sound system, and the screen will never be a teeny tiny square 50 yards away. Host a backyard movie night for your dad, and watch some of your favorite “dad” themed movies. We’re talking classics such as Field of Dreams, his favorite comic book hero movie, or of course, the perennial favorite… a backyard Star Wars movie marathon. Be sure to bring plenty of popcorn.
That’s it! That’s our round-up of our favorite Happy Father’s Day ideas sourced right here in Austin! Hopefully, you found something that is distinctly suited to your favorite superhero, your one and only dad. Enjoy!!!
